چکیده

Implications of Complex Systems and Converging Technologies for Human Performance The ability of science and technology to augment human performance depends on an understanding of systems, not just components. The convergence of technologies is an essential aspect of the effort to enable functioning systems that include human beings and technology; and serve the human beings to enhance their well-being directly and indirectly through what they do, and what they do for other human beings. The recognition today that human beings function in teams, rather than as individuals, implies that technological efforts that integrate human beings across scales of tools, communication, biological and cognitive function are essential. Understanding the role of complex systems concepts in technology integration requires a perspective on how the concept of complexity is affecting science, engineering, and finally, technology integration.

Computability and Evolutionary Complexity: Markets as Complex Adaptive Systems (cas)*

Few will argue that the epi-phenomena of biological systems and socio-economic systems are anything but complex. The purpose of this Feature is to examine critically and contribute to the burgeoning multi-disciplinary literature on markets as complex adaptive systems (CAS). The new sciences of complexity, the principles of self-organisation and emergence along with the methods of evolutionary c...

Definition of Architecture

This paper seeks to investigate a new definition for architecture by unifying the three Vitruvian principles of firmitas, utilities, and venustas via a phenomenological approach in the interpretation and analysis of their role in defining architecture. The paper is composed in two main sections. The first section investigates the nature of architecture based on the mentioned principles, where a...

Pattern-oriented modeling of agent-based complex systems: lessons from ecology.

Agent-based complex systems are dynamic networks of many interacting agents; examples include ecosystems, financial markets, and cities. The search for general principles underlying the internal organization of such systems often uses bottom-up simulation models such as cellular automata and agent-based models. No general framework for designing, testing, and analyzing bottom-up models has yet ...

A Stepwise Approach to Linking Theories

Formal modelling of complex systems requires catering for a variety of aspects. The Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP) distinguishes itself as a semantic framework that promotes unification of results across different modelling paradigms via linking functions. The naive composition of theories, however, may yield unexpected or undesirable semantic models. Here, we propose a stepwise approac...

Progress towards quantitative design principles of multicellular systems

Living systems, particularly multicellular systems, often seem hopelessly complex. But recent studies have suggested that beneath this complexity, there may be unifying quantitative principles that we are only now starting to unravel. All cells interact with their environments and with other cells. Communication among cells is a primary means for cells to interact with each other. The complexit...

A Unifying Mathematical Framework for Genetic Robustness, Environmental Robustness, Network Robustness and their Trade-offs on Phenotype Robustness in Biological Networks. Part III: Synthetic Gene Networks in Synthetic Biology

Robust stabilization and environmental disturbance attenuation are ubiquitous systematic properties that are observed in biological systems at many different levels. The underlying principles for robust stabilization and environmental disturbance attenuation are universal to both complex biological systems and sophisticated engineering systems. In many biological networks, network robustness sh...
